The Austin School of Furniture & Design -

A Woodworking and Furniture School for All

The Austin School of Furniture & Design is a woodworking and furniture school designed for dedicated hobbyists and aspiring professional furniture makers. ASFD teaches the craft of furniture making through fundamental woodworking skill classes, small and large projects, design theory, joinery techniques, and construction understanding.

All woodworking classes are taught by woodworkers, furniture makers and designers with decades of experience and knowledge. ASFD approaches craftsmanship from a traditional perspective that utilizes modern techniques, technology, and design.

Evening, weekend, skills and project-based woodworking classes are available at our location in Austin, TX.

Design Theory

From sketchpad to studio. ASFD students will learn basic furniture history, design process,  material usage, artistic application, scale modeling, 2D design and modern design technology.

Fundamental Skills

The building blocks of woodworking. Basic woodworking skills will set the foundation for future classes and projects. Shop safety, tool usage, measuring, milling, sharpening, hand tools, joinery, and finishing.

03.

Application & Projects

The best way to learn and improve. Projects will cover a wide range of woodworking skill levels and functional applications. Full-time immersive students will have the opportunity to work on real client furniture projects.

04.

Business Acumen

Business and marketing specific for furniture makers will be taught throughout the full-time programs. Concepts will cover basic legal, accounting, insurance, branding, marketing and sales for woodworkers.

PART-TIME CLASSES

Nights & Weekends

Part-time woodworking classes are perfect for beginner hobbyists seeking to dive into the craft or established furniture makers looking to tune up their skills. Classes will be held evenings or weekends and vary in skill levels and styles. Part-time classes may be taught by guest teachers, designers, furniture makers or other experienced experts. These woodworking classes may be in a short series or single class format and may or may not incorporate a project. Design

Understand basic design principles, artistic conceptualization, sketching, functional and structural design, and design software and technology.

Safety

Stay safe and keep all your fingers intact. Individual tool Do’s and Don’t, basic first aid, general safety procedures and more.

Maintenance

Understand the tools of the trade and how to care for them. Basic electrical, sharpening, cleaning, preventative measures, part replacement and more.

Fundamentals

Learn the basic woodworking skills essential to all furniture makers. Safety, shop setup, preparation, selecting parts, milling, measuring, wood movement, joinery, gluing and more.

Projects

Learn new woodworking skills while building and completing small projects such as a tool chest, stools, sawhorses, ornate boxes and more.

Business

Gain business knowledge and insight from experienced furniture makers and businessmen and women. Furniture photography, marketing for woodworkers, small business advice and more.

The Austin School of Furniture & Design provides a full-time immersive program for those seeking to become professional furniture makers. ASFD has developed a fast-paced, in-depth program to teach the craft and business of furniture making led by instructors with decades of experience and a commitment to excellence.

Students will be admitted to the Full-Time Furniture Immersive through an application and interview process in order to ensure an even baseline of woodworking knowledge and skill.

Woodworking Fundamentals

Beginning woodworking skills are a prerequisite but are reviewed in the immersive program to produce a well-rounded knowledge base to build upon.

Portfolio

Immersive students will have the opportunity to work on real client projects to build their personal portfolio.

Design

Students will learn to design custom furniture through theory, process, and application.

Instruction

Classes in the comprehensive program will be taught by masters in their respective fields.

Advanced Techniques

Students will strengthen their skills with advanced techniques in design, process, construction, finishing and more.

Capstone

Several projects will be completed throughout the program but the immersive will be topped with a full capstone project.

Take Your Skills to the Next Level

Additional Detail

Students will study woodworking and furniture making concepts and gain hands-on experience over the course of the program to become competent and skilled furniture makers.

Become a Furniture Maker

At the end of the program, students will have learned basic and advanced concepts of design and furniture construction and begun to build their personal portfolio.
