The Austin School of Furniture and Design is proud to announce that it will be expanding into a new space at the end of 2018!
ASFD currently resides in South Austin in a shared space run by ToolMarks ATX, a community woodshop for part-time and full-time woodworkers. Along with ToolMarks ATX, ASFD will be moving to East Austin and will join forces with the Splinter Group in a large industrial warehouse at Cesar Chavez and Springdale.
The Splinter Group is a collective that will become the new home to around 20 Austin-based artists, makers, fabricators and craftspeople. The mission of the Splinter Group is to provide affordable industrial workspace for members that share common goals: Devotion to Craft, Social Impact, Full-time Professional Business Practices, and Willingness to Act Together as a Community.
Having shared space with ToolMarks ATX in 2018, Austin School of Furniture and Design has found that the benefits of a shared workspace far outweigh any disadvantages and realize that we are all stronger together. As part of this new collective, that belief will become even more powerful. We can exchange technical knowledge, artistic vision, pool resources and share professional references with each other.
The school will be moving into its own dedicated space within the new warehouse that will include a larger air-conditioned bench room and a fully-equipment machine room. Not only will we be expanding our physical space but will be bringing on new teachers and offering several new classes including our first comprehensive courses.
Having a larger space with woodworking machines and cordless power tools will put us one step closer to our Immersive programs. ASFD plans to start with a 10-week course called Fundamentals of Woodworking of which you can pre-register for now. This will lead into 3 more classes, Furniture Making 1, 2, 3.
In addition to the new Splinter group housing lots of furniture makers, cobblers, blacksmiths and visual artists, the warehouse will have small and medium studio space for rent, an 1800 sf public event space and a rentable CNC machine. We hope that by being a part of this amazing space not only will it help to lower our overhead but will give us an opportunity to be a part of and grow the artist and maker community in Austin.
There is quite a lot of work that will need to go into our space and the larger Splinter Group space over the next few months including electrical improvements, office space renovations, and some “fun elements” to be added to the space. During this moving and renovation stage, ASFD will have reduced classes. We hope that you will show your interest for our 2019 offerings by checking out the pre-registration classes. This does not guarantee you a seat in the class but will ensure that you are the first to find out when they go on sale.
If you are also interested in being a part of the Splinter Group community we encourage you to send us an email and we can put you in contact with the directors.
Thank you and happy woodworking!
