Name: Democratic Chair Making
Instructor: Eric Cannizzaro
Skill Level: Upper Beginner to Advanced
Prerequisites: None

Format: Week long in-person course

Class Description:

This class will cover the fundamental tools and techniques used in Windsor chair making to construct Curtis Buchanan’s democratic chair.

We will start by splitting our parts out of a log using wedges and froes. Over the course of the week we will bend, shape, dry and assemble our democratic chairs. We will rely on a few core tools – notably the drawknife and scorp – and push them beyond the point of diminishing returns, a skill building exercise for the beginning and experienced chair makers alike.

Topics and skills covered will include:

  • Brief chair history
  • Wood technology
  • Wet/dry joinery
  • Splitting vs. riving
  • Bending
  • Sharpening
  • Drilling and bits
  • Reaming
