Name: Kumiko & Frame Making
Instructor: Matt Kenney
Skill Level: Upper beginner
Age: You must be at least 18 years old to participate
Format: Online Workshop
Here’s your chance to learn both the fundamentals of Kumiko, and a few advanced techniques. We will start by making the frame, using a crosscut sled and a few finger joint jigs. The thicker frame around the outside offers a challenge when it comes to making the corner joints, but I’ll show you a clever way to guarantee they are spaced correctly and lock together tightly. After the frame is together, we move on to the infill patterns.
We’ll start with the three asa-no-ha patterns in the middle, making them with a chisel and two guide blocks. The hashtag pattern around the perimeter looks hard to make, but it’s not, at least not if you use the sled I’ve designed to cut them 45º angles into the pieces so that the pattern can be spun in the frame. At the end of the day, you’ll know everything you need to know to make the panel in your own shop, and we’ll circle back two weeks later so that you can ask any questions that came up as you were making yours.
As part of this course, you will receive a set of detailed plans, a material list and a cut list. The class will be made up of two sessions – The Main Demonstration and the Q & A. The main demonstration will be live online and will show you how to make the panel, sleds, asa-no-ha pattern and hashtag pattern. The session will be recorded so you can refer back to it when you work on your project in you own shop. You will have about two weeks to work on the panel before the follow up session. Don’t worry, you don’t have to finish. We just want to give you an opportunity to ask questions after you have started working on your panel. So we will host a short Q&A to address them. Questions will need to be submitted ahead of time via a form that will be emailed to you.
Live Demonstration – December 5th 9am CDT
Live Follow-Up Q&A – December 19th at 4pm CDT
