David Heim – Instructor for the Austin School of Furniture & Design

David Heim grew up in Colorado and moved to New York City to attend college at Columbia University. He went on to earn a master’s degree from Columbia’s Journalism School. For the next 28 years, David worked at Consumer Reports magazine as one of its top editors. After leaving Consumer Reports, he joined Fine Woodworking magazine as an associate editor. There, he discovered SketchUp when he edited an article by a retired engineer about the program.

Since then, he has used SketchUp in one activity or another nearly every day. He has written one book about SketchUp and edited three others. He regularly teaches an introductory SketchUp class at his local Woodcraft store, at the Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking, and at the Brookfield (Ct.) Craft Center. And he has posted nearly 500 models of traditional and contemporary furniture to a SketchUp database known as the 3D Warehouse.

David lives in Connecticut with his wife and son, teaching at the Austin School of Furniture and Design via video conferencing.
