Michael Fortune has designed and made furniture by commission since 1975 for private residences all over North America often putting in numerous pieces in each residence. His work incorporates a variety of wood forming techniques.

He maintains a spacious studio and sawmill near Peterborough Ontario were he employs a skilled assistant. He also has consulted for international aid agencies assisting furniture manufacturers in developing economies. He received the prestigious Bronfman Award in 1993, was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 2000 and received the 2007 Award of Distinction from the American Furniture Society based in North Carolina. He graduated from Sheridan College near Toronto in 1974. Michael occasionally conducts furniture design and construction workshops throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia.
