Class Description:

The three way miter creates a clean, seamless transition from leg to rail; without visible end grain each piece flows neatly into the next. This joint has long been a staple of Asian furniture, but in its traditional hand cut form it is a very challenging joint to pull off. This class will cover modern mechanized methods of cutting a three way miter joint that give you all the aesthetic benefits without sacrificing strength. Over the course of this 5 day class each student will craft, and take home, a side table featuring three way miters and tapered legs. We will explore local hardwoods for the frame and panel top of the table by visiting a local mill where each student will select their own material to incorporate into the table. Open up your furniture making practice to new realms of design with this surprisingly simple, and infinitely versatile, joint.

The material for this table is not included as we will go to the lumber yard together to select from some local hardwoods. Alternatively, you may bring your own lumber. Please no exotics. Board footage for the table would be 6.5 bf of 8/4 material for the legs and frame and a center panel of 16″ x 20″.

Topics and skills covered will include:

  • Tool Safety
  • Breaking down boards into smaller components
  • Milling legs and rails with grain orientation in mind
  • Paying attention to wood grain in furniture design
  • Cutting perfect miters
  • Efficient machine cut 3-way miter joinery
  • Frame and panel construction, selecting material for design impact and cohesion with the rest of the piece
  • Tapering legs
