What are Community Classes?

Community Classes are focused on growing the woodworking community, teaching basic woodworking skills and increasing access to tools and wood. These classes are run by skilled volunteers and build 1 small project completed in only a few hours. The class sizes are kept small and the number of tools used is limited. The price of the class is a “pay what you can” model. We provide a suggested price range for the class but you can choose to pay the minimum or more than the suggested amount as a donation. Each person attending the class must sign up individually regardless of payment amount.

Class Description:

A fun, 3-4 hour class with other enthusiasts to build a walnut or cherry wood gravity bar paper hanger. This ingenious design uses the weight of small steel balls held in slanted pockets inside the hanger to allow paper to be inserted and held in place via gravity. A slight pull releases the paper for removal. These make great gifts and conversation pieces for displaying art work, to do lists, order slips, instructions, photographs, posters, etc. The
dimensions of the paper hanger are approximately 1 1/8 x 1 7/8 x 19 inches.

Woodworking:

During the class you will learn the following woodworking techniques:

  • How to use a jointer, planer and table saw to mill rough lumber to preliminary and final dimensions
  • How to resaw wood to create thinner wood stock
  • How to safely route angled cavities and a slot to hold steel balls at the appropriate angle to enable paper insertion, hanging, and removal
  • How to align, glue and clamp the parts together
  • How to route key hole slots for the mounting screws
  • How to shape the edges, sand, and prep for finish
  • We will also discuss various finishing options

What to Bring:

  • A desire to learn some new skills in a fun, safe and supportive environment.
  • A positive attitude to share in a community of craftsmanship.
  • Drink and a snack (if desired)
  • Measuring tape, pencil and eye protection
  • Hearing and dust protection (optional)
  • All other materials (wood and magnets) and tools are provided by the school

Austin School of Furniture has the right to cancel this class at anytime if the minimum amount of students is not reached.
