What are Community Classes?
Community Classes are focused on growing the woodworking community, teaching basic woodworking skills and increasing access to tools and wood. These classes are run by skilled volunteers and build 1 small project completed in only a few hours. The class sizes are kept small and the number of tools used is limited. The price of the class is a “pay what you can” model. We provide a suggested price range for the class but you can choose to pay $25 or more than the suggested amount as a donation. Each person attending the class must sign up individually regardless of payment amount.

Class Description:
A fun, 3-4 hour class with other enthusiasts to build a walnut or cherry wood magnetic wall holder for knives. While designed for kitchen knives, the bar can be used to hold anything made out of metal. The bar is 18 inches long, 1 7/8 inch wide and 1 inch deep. The wall mounted bar houses 14 magnets that provide sufficient strength to hold common size kitchen knives in a very compact area. Two key hole slots are cut into the back of the bar to
allow the bar to be securely hung from two wall mounted screws. The bar allow you to display your knife collection, while keeping them handy for easy access and use.
During this class you will learn and utilize the following tools and techniques:
- How to use a jointer, planer and table saw to mill rough lumber to final dimensions
- How to use a dado stack on the table saw to cut a center groove in the bar to hold the magnets
- How to align, insert and glue 14 neodymium magnets into the groove
- How to mill, route, glue and clamp a perfectly sized wood strip to cover the center groove with a cavity for the magnets
- How to use a hand plane to flush the block and cover strip
- How to route key hole slots for the mounting screws
- How to shape round corners and edges to soften the feel of the block
- We will also discuss various finishing options
What to bring:
If you have any of these tools please bring them but we have plenty that you can borrow as well.
