Class Description:
Whether you are a musician who wants to learn woodworking techniques, or a woodworker who would like to learn the elements necessary to create stringed musical instruments, or just someone looking for a fun week, this is the class for you! Let a skilled professional woodworker guide you through the safe use of tools including the bandsaw, router, drill press and stationary sanders. Students will learn to shape with hand tools, properly cut and inlay frets, lay out scale lengths, then string and strum the dulcimer guitar you create! That’s right, each student will walk away with their very own, playable, Dulcimer Guitar.
Materials and hardware are provided.
What you’ll need:
Required
- Eye, ear, and dust protection
- Paper and pencil
- Measuring tape
- Combination square
- Japanese saw
- Dragon or Shinto rasp – Here
Optional (If you don’t bring your own you will have to share the school’s limited quantity)
- Fret Mallet
- Fret Saw – Here
- Reusable water bottle
If you have done some woodworking, and have some tools you think would be useful, feel free to bring them. It does not hurt to bring more than you need.
