Class Description:

On Memorial Day Weekend, what better way to honor the memory of our veterans and their service than to build a beautiful walnut flag display case. The case is approximately 13 inches tall by 25 inches wide and 3 3⁄4 inches deep and is designed to hold a standard size flag of 5 feet wide by 9 1⁄2 feet in length. This can be a burial flag, memorial flag, retirement flag, service flag, etc. Once folded into a tight triangle, the flag fits snuggly into the case and is visible but protected by the glass front. The back panel is removable to allow access to the inside of the case. This class includes a plexiglass pane but instructions will be given on replacing it with real glass.

Woodworking: During the class you will learn the following woodworking techniques:

  • How to measure, mark and accurately cut your project parts to length
  • How to cut steep angle miters on the table saw with tenoning jig
  • How to dry fit your parts and make any necessary adjustments
  • How to sand and pre-finish the interior prior to glue up
  • How to create a grain matched front frame to cover the glass pane
  • How to create dados to accept the pane of glass as well as the panel back
  • How to glue up a triangular shaped object with sharp angles
  • How to sand and finish the outside of the case
  • How to fold the flag into a triangular shape to fit into the case

  • A desire to learn some new skills in a fun, safe and supportive environment.
  • A positive attitude to share in a community of craftsmanship.
