Class Description:

The 2nd class in our comprehensive series, Furniture Making 1 begins to apply the fundamental concepts taught in Fundamentals of Woodworking to creating beautiful furniture. This coffee table is designed with learning and woodworking techniques in mind. It is based on a simple but fun Scandinavian design and includes cylindrical legs protruding through the top, rounded rails cut to match the radius of the round legs, floating tenons, and a convenient shelf.

Students will get the chance to use both machines and hand tools while refreshing their fundamentals and learning new furniture making techniques. Student will learn the structural, aesthetic, and wood-movement concerns that have gone into the design and plans. They will learn how to choose, mark, and rough out parts from rough lumber to maximize structural and aesthetic effectiveness. Build on the milling skills learned in Fundamentals of Woodworking. Use familiar and new techniques to make joinery – Like the PantoRouter. Learn how to shape wood parts using a pattern, a bandsaw, and a flush-trim bit on the router table. And taking the table to the next level with edge treatments and embellishments.

Another feature of this class is that students may select the wood species they would like to use for their coffee table. The class price will adjust according to the average price of that species at nearby lumber yards.

  • Understanding plans and schematics

Choose Your Wood Species:

You can select from 5 choices of domestic hardwoods to use for this class: Cherry, beech, Maple, White Oak or Walnut. The price of the class will adjust accordingly. Wood prices change all the time so we have averaged their board footage price between local lumber yards to set the material price. We have provided a few images of what the wood might look like but it will vary from the actual lumber. The lumber will be delivered to the school and will be ready for you on day 1.
