Class Description:
Join James Wright of the Wood by Wright Youtube and media channels for a five day, in person class. This project is appropriate for beginners and woodworkers of all skill levels, especially those who are looking to shore up their hand tool skills. All parts will be pre milled by school staff, so you’ll just be able to focus on the joinery. This table covers a wide range of topics from layout to dovetails and mortise and tenons. This project will show you a holistic approach to using hand tools, and will be a great opportunity for James to share his extensive knowledge of hand tools and best practices. We’ll also cover topics like tool maintenance and sharpening to keep your hand tools in the best shape possible.
You are more than welcome to share the school’s supply of hand tools and chisels. Some specialty items we have limited quantities of. Please do not go out and purchase every item on this list for this class, but if you already have them please bring them with you. Especially when it comes to hand tools, everyone has different preferences and learning to use your specific tools will benefit you in the long run. If you are looking to invest in some of these tools before class, feel free to reach out to the school for recommendations or more information.
Recommended Tools:
- Standard layout tools: tape measure, combination square, 6” and 12” rules, 0.5 mechanical pencil with leads, small try square
- Bevel gauge or dovetail gauge
- Marking knife
- Marking gauge
- Chisel set
- Mortising Chisel 1/4″ or 3/8″
- Mallet
- Grooving plane, or a chisel or tenon saw
- Rabbet plan, or a chisel and a tenon saw
- Scrub Plane
- 4-8 panel clamps
- No.4 or 5 bench plane
- Block Plane
- Dovetail saw
- Tenon saw
- Larger ripping saw (26″ 4PPI or frame saw optimal, but any ripping panel saw will do)
- Auger or Forstner bit set (1/4″-3/8″)
- Drill or brace
