Class Description:
Sharpening is essential to good craftsmanship as well as safety. In this class, you will learn to establish and maintain a sharp chisel or plane Iron. The process and techniques will be taught through lecture, demonstration, and hands-on application. You have will have the chance to get your hands dirty working with all kinds of sharpening tools and methods. After this class you will understand what sharp is, how to achieve it and how to maintain that sharpness.
Students are required to bring their own new or used chisel to work on in class and we recommend wearing clothing that can get wet or dirty. Please bring your own sharpening stones if you have them.
Topics Covered:
- What is sharp?
- Identifying sharp and dull tools
- Understanding of stones: their types, grits and uses
- Understanding of flatness: blades and stones
- Understanding of blade angles and their different uses
- Understanding of hand tool blades
- Hollow grinding
- Micro-bevels
- Honing jigs and fixtures
- Western vs Japanese chisels
- Types of steel and its effect on sharpness and durability
- The honing process
What to bring:
- Water stones (If you have them. Otherwise, you can borrow ours)
- Chisel to sharpen (mandatory)
- We will have extras just in case
- Eye protection (mandatory)
- Hearing protection (optional)
- Dust protection (optional)
- Water
