Class Description:

A fun, one day class with other enthusiasts to build a beautiful leaf-shaped keepsake box. The box is made from three woods: walnut for the bottom and side walls, padauk to form the deep red veined leaf top with a strip of maple inlaid down the middle of the curved top. We will discuss bandsaw and scroll saw box making basics as well as a deeper dive into the specific techniques and tools that we will use to build this box. The final dimensions of the leaf box are approximately 3 inches wide, 7 1⁄2 inches long, and 13/4 inches tall.

During this class you will learn to use the following tools and woodworking techniques:

– Discuss how to prepare the various size wood blanks that are used for the project.
– How to prepare and shape templates to create the leaf-shaped parts.
– How to mark the cut lines and use a bandsaw to cut the outside edges.
– How to mark the cuts lines and use a scroll saw to cut the inner edges.
– How to use a combination of planes, scrapers and a variety of sanders to refine the shape and smooth the part surfaces.
– How to glue and clamp the small parts to form the box.
– How to flush and sand the final assembled box.
– Discuss various finishes and finishing techniques to complete the box.
– How to apply an oil-based finish and paste wax to bring out the color and luster of the box.
