Why a Raised Garden Planter?
A raised garden planter on your deck, balcony or patio allows you to easily grow herbs, vegetables, or flowers in a convenient, accessible location using your existing outdoor space, without needing to dig into the rocky Central Texas “soil”, while also providing better drainage, easier access for tending plants, and the ability to control the soil quality by using fresh potting mix instead of relying on existing soil conditions; making gardening more comfortable and manageable, especially if you have limited space or mobility concerns.
Class Description:
In this half day class, each student will build their very own Large Raised Garden Planter (commercial value approximately $150 to $300). This planter is the perfect height to allow stand up gardening and avoid kneeling and stooping to tend your plants. The all cedar wood planter measures approximately 33 inches tall, 47 inches long, by 17 inches wide, by 10 inches deep. The 45 x 15 inch undershelf is perfect for holding your gardening supplies, tools, plants, pots, etc. The planter construction utilizes ¾ inch thick cedar wood making it very strong, rigid and weather and pest resistant.
In this beginner class, students will learn to use a variety of power tools and techniques to build the planter. We will use a table saw to rip the cedar lumber to various widths, a jointer to clean up any uneven edges, and a mix of table saws with sleds and miter saws to crosscut parts to length. Handheld power drills will be used to create drainage holes in the bottom of the planter box. A combination of butt joints and miter joints will be utilized to construct the box with exterior glue and 18 gauge brad nailers. Finally, we will lightly sand any sharp corners or rough edges to make it smooth and touch friendly.
