Class Description:
This course will lead each student through building, shaping and texturing wood and create their own personalized vessel with power/hand carving techniques. This class will show you a basic laminations, using a method of stacking up many pieces of wood together to create a larger blank to start the carving project using traditional clamps. To explore more organic and free form shapes through the project, this class will also provide you the opportunity to learn how to use hand shaping tools (ex., gouge, rasp, file, scraper, etc.) and power carving tools (ex., angle grinder, die grinder, jointer, circular saw, band saw, etc.) safely and properly. Every student will leave with their own carved vessel with personal touches.
Recommended Tools:
- Personal angle grinder and Die Grinder with Kutzall wheel (optional)
- U gouge Pfiel #8/18
- Mallet
- U Gouges, V gouges, skews
All of these tools are optional and we will have some to share at the school. If you are interested in continuing the practice of power carving, these tools will be a great start. It’s never a bad idea to get some practice using tools you purchase for the first time in a safe, supervised environment.
Austin School of Furniture has the right to cancel this class at anytime if the minimum amount of students is not reached.
