What are Community Classes?
Community Classes are focused on growing the woodworking community, teaching basic woodworking skills and increasing access to tools and wood. These classes are run by skilled volunteers and build 1 small project completed in only a few hours. The class sizes are kept small and the number of tools used is limited. The price of the class is a “pay what you can” model. We provide a suggested price range for the class but you can choose to pay $0 or more than the suggested amount as a donation. Each person attending the class must sign up individually regardless of payment amount.

Class Description:
Spring is upon us in Central Texas and what better way to celebrate new beginnings than by building a new garden planter box to host your favorite plants. This attractive planter is 15-½” square and 16-½” tall with a generous opening of 12″ and an inside depth of 10″. This fun short class will teach you some great woodworking skills while constructing this study and beautiful planter out of 3 cedar fence pickets. Join other gardening and woodworking enthusiasts for a fun class experience. These planters also make excellent gifts (commercial value of $80-$120).
Woodworking: During the class you will learn the following woodworking techniques:
– How to measure, mark and cut your project parts including how to rip cut (table saw) and crosscut (miter saw).
– How to make butt joints as well as miter joints.
– How to assemble your project using clamps, glue and nails.
– How to lightly sand to remove any sharp edges and corners.
– No finishing is required, but optional finishing techniques will be discussed. What to Bring:
– A desire to learn some new skills in a fun, safe and supportive environment. – A positive attitude to share in a community of craftmanship.
– Drink and a snack (if desired)
– Measuring tape, pencil and eye protection
– Optionally you may choose to bring the following if you have these: combination square, hearing protection, dust protection, and any other tools that you think might be helpful.
All other materials (cedar wood, nails, exterior glue, sandpaper, etc.) and tools are provided by the school.
