Class Description:

In this 5 day class we will learn the three primary seat weaving patterns popular today, hand cane, rush, and Danish cord. This will be a technique based class so no woodworking will be done, and no prior experience is necessary. We’ll weave onto frames provided by the school which will fit into a checked bag so no need to be concerned about how to get your project home on the plane.

Cane is one of the most difficult materials to work with but also one of the most satisfying. We’ll weave the traditional 7 step pattern on frames with holes drilled along the perimeter. It’s a classic pattern that can be used in modern designs as well. It’s impressive looking too, “You did that?!”

Rush is a simple pattern to learn but difficult to master. Learning this one in a class setting will give a head start in avoiding some of the common mistakes. Rush is traditionally woven in grass and on modern chairs, Danish cord. But we’ll use paper fiber rush which is easy to work with and best to learn on.

Danish cord is by far the most popular pattern right now. Instructions on how to weave it with nails can be easily found so we’ll do ours with a no-nail method I’ve worked out. This method is different than the one I did in Fine Woodworking years ago. It’s better and stronger! It’s also too complicated for a written article so this may be one of the only times it’s being taught in a class.

All materials are provided by the Austin School of Furniture and are included in the cost of the class.
