Class Description:

Join us for a hands-on broom-making workshop focused on learning a practical, time-tested craft. In this class, each participant will make their own handwoven whisk brooms using traditional broom-making techniques.

Broom making has a long history as a functional household skill, passed down through generations of makers. In this workshop, we’ll work much like those earlier craftspeople did: sitting together, learning by doing, and paying close attention to materials, structure, and technique. The focus is on craftsmanship—how simple fibers become a durable, useful tool through thoughtful construction.

All supplies are provided, and no prior experience is necessary. The pace is relaxed and accessible, with plenty of guidance throughout. This is an opportunity to slow down, work with your hands, and gain a solid introduction to a traditional making practice.

Participants will learn how to weave a Hawk Tail Whisk Broom and a Turkey Wing Whisk, hand brooms designed to echo the shape of their namesakes.  You’ll learn the basics of broom construction and leave with two whisk broom that are both functional and well made.

All levels welcome. Come curious, leave with a broom you can actually use.

• All supplies will be provided by the Austin School of Furniture, but if you have anything you use in an at home broom weaving practice you are welcome to bring them.
